HOW WE HELP
East Texas Cornerstone Assistance Network administers federal grant funds to prevent homelessness throughout East Texas. After undergoing a careful screening process, families receive funds to allow them to stay in their current housing, enabling them to remain stable and productive.
Cornerstone Resale and Donation Center
Cornerstone's Resale Store in Tyler makes life affordable for people in East Texas. Thanks to our amazing donors we are able to make extremely high quality clothing and household items available to people at affordable prices.
Cornerstone Classes provides training for our clients in the soft skills necessary for landing and keeping a good job. Twice a week our clients gather in our training room with knowledgeable, compassionate staff members to go through Jobs for Life computer based training sessions.
"Cornerstone gave me the opportunity to work and earn the things I needed and was there when I needed and was there for me when I didn't even know how to be there for myself."
-Jackie, Cornerstone Client
Thrift Stores on the Road
On a monthly basis, the Resale Store goes on the road to locations where affordable clothing and thrift stores are not readily available to families with limited transportation. At the same time, staff listens for other family needs and refers to Cornerstone or other collaborative partners.
Adults and teenagers volunteer on a regular basis to sort clothes, operate cash registers, drive our truck, work alongside clients, and help with general office needs. Some of our regular volunteers are clients from Achieving Dreams, a program for mentally challenged adults. These individuals volunteer twice a week to help sort clothing and stock the Store. In 2016 Cornerstone’s unduplicated volunteer count was 287 individuals serving a total of 1,243 times.
Cornerstone’s Christmas Store makes it possible for moms, dads, and grandparents to provide a Christmas for their children and grandchildren by making new toys available at one half of retail prices. This ministry empowers people in poverty to provide for themselves.
Cornerstone employees, trains, and places people in jobs. We employee people to work in our stores and in our building doing everything from sorting clothes to laying tile. We seek to identify their skill set and let them use their skills to do their best work. As they work, we have staff members who come alongside them and provide training. Additionally, East Texas Cornerstone Assistance Network helps the client find a new and better job, with increased income so they can meet their own needs for many year to come.
Because of the size of the facility, Cornerstone also makes office space available to small non-profits at a reduced price to help further their ministries. There are 16 different entities benefitting from Cornerstone’s sharing of our building, including Child Evangelism Fellowship, Hope of Glory Church, Restorative Justice and Parental Care Ministries.
Cornerstone collaborates with more than 40 churches and more than 30 nonprofits to help people meet their basic needs and live better lives. The partners send people to Cornerstone when they encounter someone who needs our services. We then follow-up with the referring church or agency as we work together to transform the client’s life. With a location in north Tyler, Cornerstone is accessible for families to get to us and receive services.
